SAPA was engaged by the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) to undertake an independent review of the current WAFLW competition landscape and broader industry trends to determine the most appropriate introduction of a player payment framework for the WAFLW competition.

The purpose of the project was to enhance the WAFLW competition by enhancing competitive balance and ensuring that talented West Australian female players outside the AFLW participate in the WAFLW and in an environment that facilitates their development, retention and if possible, progression to the AFLW.

The report detailed 15 key insights and 12 key recommendations across salary cap levels, minimum and maximum player payments, funding models, commercial asset utilisation, and compliance processes to deliver on the WAFC’s objectives.

"The WAFC engaged SAPA to conduct two critical strategic reviews this year—WAFLW Player Payments and Umpire Retention and Coaching. From the outset, SAPA’s expertise and dedication were evident, fostering a strong foundation of trust with our stakeholders. Their nuanced understanding of the complexities within the football landscape in Western Australia based on their experience working in the industry meant they didn’t just deliver a report; they provided practical, targeted recommendations that address immediate challenges while setting a path for long-term sustainability.

SAPA's industry insights and strategic approach have left an invaluable imprint on WA football, supporting us in making informed decisions that will shape the sport's future success.
